Marrakech, Morocco

Trip Details

  • Total time: 4 days

Itinerary

  • Day 1: arrive, lunch, Jardin Majorelle
  • Day 2: 8-9hr walking tour of Medina
  • Day 3: Full day tour of the three valleys of the High Atlas Mountains with small hike
  • Day 4: Cooking class

Hostel

  • La Casa Del Sol
    • Inside Medina in the Souks
    • Great location, quite hostel, extremely nice family that owns/works there

Airport Transfer

  • We bought an airport transfer online before because we weren’t sure how safe/easy it was to get a cab at a reasonable price (there is no public transit)
  • The car can’t take you into the souks so then we get a ride from a guy who pushed us in a cart- sounds crazy and it was haha!
  • On the way back to the airport, we had our hotel arrange a cab for us

To Do & See

  • We booked day tours (using Viator) with guides because we weren’t sure how comfortable/safe it would be to be there by ourselves
    • Tour 1: walking tour of Medina- long but amazing. We got to see things we definitely wouldn’t have seen on our own and an amazing lunch was included
    • Tour 2: 3 valleys tour- this was a small tour (6 people) where we took a van into the mountains and did a waterfall hike, ate lunch in a berber family home, and saw Richard Branson’s resort. It is a lot of driving but saw some amazing areas outside of the city of Marrakech
    • Activity 3: cooking class- we learned how to make traditional Moroccan mint tea, shop in the souks for vegetables and meat, make a tagine, and eat a nice meal. It was also a lot of down time while the tagine was cooking but overall really liked it.
  • Visit Jardin Majorelle!! (don’t need a tour but it is just outside Medina)

Eats

  • Definitely eat in the souks for dinner in Jamaa el fna square
  • No matter where you go at any time of day, all the restaurants and “huts” serve the same food (tagine and couscous with pita and salad)- Moroccan food is amazing but it really doesn’t matter where you go because it is all the same

Other Tips

  • There are LOTS of people trying to get you to buy from there stores, restaurants, etc. In Medina it is 100% acceptable to bargin.
  • Be careful if you want to get henna because lots of times it is fake and can give you bad infections
  • If people come up to you trying to sell you things, say NO. If you ignore them, they will continue to follow you
  • Dressing very conservatively is not really necessary (in my opinion). There are lots of tourists so most things are fine as long as you cover knees and shoulders (I wore leggings and a short sleeve shirt everyday). No matter what you wear, men will comment so you just have to ignore it and keep walking.
  • Credit card isn’t really taken so make sure you have cash. Make sure your hostel will take card and if not, make sure you have enough cash to check in
    • Be careful when using ATMs. Make sure they are out in the open and nobody is watching you/hovering near
